Even if you've visited Ohiopyle State Park several times, be sure to explore the Sugarloaf Mountain area on your next visit. Local trail enthusiasts have been updating the trail system in this area, and it's now much more than just Baughman Rocks!
McCune Trail is one of our favorite trails in this area. We discovered this 4-mile loop this spring before the leaves were out in full bloom. Most folks enjoy the trail in a counter-clockwise fashion, so we'll describe the loop beginning from the parking area and leading counter-clockwise below.
The trail begins with a rather steep climb up and away from the parking area. Soon enough though, one can enjoy the single track climb through beautiful boulder outcrops. McCune Trail is the obvious and clear path to follow, but do pay attention, as several side trails extend away from McCune Trail towards other rock outcrops and boulders nearby.
After skirting the mountain top for a bit, the trail turns left and descends quickly to an excellent vista with a bench. What a spot!
Now the trail stays level as is turns back towards Sugarloaf Road while traversing a sidehill of the mountain. Be sure to enjoy the old homestead and pond along the trail as well. What an amazing place to live!
The last section of trail is more of a wide grass path and/or muddy double track, then a single track trail. It's still great, though! Pass a trail intersection with Canyon Loop Trail, then continue on along an old farmstead and orchard before reaching the parking lot. Want more? Note: Many hikers, runners, and cyclists who prefer a slightly longer loop park at Sugarloaf Parking Lot and utilize Upper Canyons Edge Trail or Upper Sugarloaf Trail to connect with McCune Trail.
